Keynote Address
Economy in Crisis: Practical Approaches to Reaching Operational Excellence in Shared Services.Michael Bloch, Partner, Global Business Technology, McKinsey
In the face of an economic downturn, there are practical changes companies can make to reduce costs and improve operational excellence in their back office functions, particularly in shared services centers. McKinsey launched the largest and most comprehensive benchmark of operational excellence in remote shared service centres, based on inputs from clients offshoring processes or services as well as associates, operations managers, and senior executives at remote centres to provide a 360º view of performance metrics and key operating practices. Data gathered from these surveys reveals three broad themes:
- Clients are satisfied with current remote services and operations: Over 250 customers, consistently expressed high satisfaction with offshore partners or their captive operations,
- Contrary to commonly held beliefs, performance is highly dependent on a small group of operating practices (e.g. talent management, governance, performance improvement approaches) rather than functional expertise or location. Our data clearly shows that effective practices are not applied consistently even within the same centre,
- The presence of “islands of excellence” shows that centres can enhance performance, with the right approach. Replicating effective practices found in isolated processes or “islands of excellence” across an organisation is highly valuable.
This session is a must-attend for executives looking for steps they can begin taking tomorrow to address the current economy. |
